They are actually made from wheat. Although the clever bit is, everything but the protein has been stripped out, to make it almost like a super-powered flour that is all protein and very little starch. This is known as Vital Wheat Gluten.
This is then turned into a dough, and cooked to form Seitan (pronounced say-tan) or what is sometimes referred to as “wheat meat” or “wheat protein”.
Often used in Asian cuisine and when prepared the right way, seitan surprisingly resembles the look and texture of meat, making it perfect for making our burgers.
Seitan itself is more about texture than taste. It’s own mild flavour lends itself perfectly to be flavored in a variety of ways. The ingredients we’ve added and the spices we’ve chosen help to bring out a deep savoury flavour in our burgers with just a hint of smoke.
Just like any other burger. It will not crumble, fall apart or turn to mush. Chuck it on the grill and it will hold its own at any BBQ!
