Why the Beta Burger?

First and foremost, the Beta Burger is a damn good burger.

But choosing a plant-based diet, or at least choosing plant-based options when you can is something we believe to be incredibly important. We don't believe in preaching but sometimes if you believe passionately enough about the topics it's hard not to sound like that's what you're doing. The topics at hand are so open-and-shut, however, that the facts can speak for themselves.

Producing meat is having a devastating impact on our planet. The Livestock industry creates more  greenhouse gasses than all our cars, planes and trains combined (www.ciwf.org.uk). That means that producing meat is the one of the key contributors to climate change, which is likely the biggest threat to life as we know it today.

And if you’re interested here are some more stats...

  • 1 calorie of animal protein requires 10x the fossil fuel input as 1 calorie of plant protein. (onegreenplanet.org)
  • 1 pound of animal meat requires 95x the amount of water to produce as 1 pound of wheat. (onegreenplanet.org)
  • 7 football fields’ worth of land is bulldozed every minute to create more room for farmed animals and the crops that feed them. (The Smithsonian Institution)
  • A 1/3 of the world's cereal harvest is fed to factory-farmed animals – this could feed nearly 40% of the world’s population. (www.ciwf.org.uk)

Beyond the environmental aspects the ethics of industrial or 'factory' farming processes needed to produce meat on the scales we consume it are difficult to justify.

Factory farming is the biggest cause of animal cruelty on the planet. Two out of every three farm animals in the world are now factory farmed. (www.ciwf.org.uk)

Whether you want to lower your environmental impact, put an end to the suffering of animals that are intensively farmed or help towards creating a more sustainable food system for our growing population, choosing a plant-based lifestyle is a big move in the right direction.

Take your first step by choosing plant-based alternatives when you can. We have made our burgers to help make the alternative option every bit as tasty and good for you as the meat based option, so why not try them out? Then, once you're convinced, make a game out of seeing how many of your meat-eating friends you can feed without them anyone realising they are eating vegan!
